In hindsight, Magic Johnson never needed his job with the Lakers — and he made sure to let the world know in a chat with Diamond Leung of The Athletic.
Magic Johnson on leaving the Lakers: “I got two companies worth over a billion dollars. So I didn’t need the job. I loved going back and helping the Lakers, but I didn’t need the job.”

Johnson resigned from his post near the end of the 2018-19 regular season during an impromptu press conference at Staples Center. It was a move that shocked the world at the time.
During his tenure, the Lakers failed to meet expectations every single year. According to Magic, the team was talking behind his back, making executive moves without him, and struggling to put together a stable leadership structure.
In the end, Johnson was at odds with GM Rob Pelinka and others over what amounted to a dramatic few years. Since his departure, the team has faired much better, assembling a team with LeBron, Anthony Davis, and Kyle Kuzma. They have a shot to win the title — and Magic, he seems to be doing just fine on his own.
