It’s not a secret that Barcelona aren’t going through the best moment right now and the Blaugrana supporters have started to ask for changes. Ernesto Valverde has received a lot of criticism in recent times and rumors about his departure increase by the day.
Some big names have been linked with the club, but there is one that’s getting more and more attention in the last couple of days. River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo has been linked with the Barcelona job this past week, but now he has done his part to play down these rumors.
According to AS, it had even been suggested that the Argentine tactician could replace Ernesto Valverde as early as next month, with the Catalan giants struggling to get good results and display good football.
Although they’re just one point off top spot in La Liga as well as leading the way in Group F in the Champions League, they haven’t always convinced and things don’t look favorable for them.
All of this has led to speculation over Valverde’s future with the club, but based on his comments, Gallardo doesn’t seem to be in a huge rush to leave his current side and make the move to the Nou Camp.
“I can’t echo rumors. No one offered me a meeting or a conversation about my future. This is not the time to do it,” he told Globo Esporte, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.
“We are in a very important phase for our club and we are playing decisive matches. Of course, there is nothing that prevents me from concentrating on my goals.”
This doesn’t mean he won’t go manage Barcelona, but right now he’s very focused on River Plate, trying to win his third Copa Libertadores trophy in 4 years at the end of the month. This can help Valverde to get more time with Barca.
Yet, the clock is ticking for the Spanish boss and if something doesn’t change fast, maybe not Gallardo, but a different manager will take over from him.
