With last night’s win over the Philadelphia 76ers, the Magic are in a 3-way tie for 10th place in the East. After meeting their goal of making the postseason last year, it’s safe to assume that they are trending the wrong way in this campaign.

The combined forces of Vucevic and Evan Fournier have kept them competitive, but they need more if they want to truly take a step up this season.

As a career 20-point per game scorer, Spurs star DeMar DeRozan could help the Magic in their pursuits — for a price.

As rumors swirl regarding the state of his future in San Antonio, multiple scenarios have been spilled on a possible trade package for the 30-year-old veteran. Who is to say Orlando couldn’t get involved?

According to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, they have already expressed significant interest in acquiring DeMar in a potential deal with the Spurs.

In theory, the Spurs could get young guys Aaron Gordon and Mo Bamba in return for their star as a way of jumpstarting a rebuild and setting themselves up for the future. If they trade the rest of their core (Aldridge, Gay, Mills), they’ll be set up for the next few years to come. Trading DeMar would be the first step in that process.

Meanwhile, for the Magic, their need for scoring would be fulfilled with DeRozan. Though he struggles to stay consistent from the perimeter, his ability to drive and score at the rim would be a valuable addition for them. The sum of DeRozan, Vuc, and Fournier would be a deadly trio.

So, as the season progresses, expect Orlando to get increasingly aggressive in their search for star-power, whether it’s for DeMar DeRozan or for someone else. They have the assets to make things very interesting on the trade market this season.
