As a 3x All-Star, 2x All-NBA player, and 2019 Champion, there are a lot of titles when talking about veteran big man Marc Gasol.

And in light of Monday night’s performance against the 76ers, we can add another one to the list: Embiid stopper.

In case you forgot, Embiid endured what was probably the worst game of his career earlier this week, going scoreless in 31 minutes on the floor. As bad as it was, it actually matches a rather interesting theme dating back to the 2016-17 season.

You see, since his debut season a few years ago, Joel Embiid has never scored above 15 points or shot above 40% from the field in a regular-season game in which Marc Gasol has played. Here is a list of his performances against Gasol, per Reddit user u/siakams:

2016-17:

– 12 points (4/10 FG, 1/4 3PT, 3/4 FT)

2017-18:

– 14 points (4/10 FG, 0/2 3PT, 6/6 FT)

– 15 points (5/13 FG, 0/2 3PT, 5/9 FT)

2018-19:

– 15 points (4/13 FG, 0/2 3PT, 7/8 FT)

– 14 points (4/15 FG, 0/6 3PT, 6/10 FT)

Looks like Joel Embiid has found his Kryptonite. Not only has Marc Gasol locked him down in the regular season, but he’s also dominated in the playoffs — which were capped off, of course, by his team raising the trophy in June.

Their next matchup is December 8th, where we get to watch Embiid try to break this streak when they welcome Gasol and the crew to Philly. It will be interesting to see what he’s able to do, and how his team will fare if they meet again when it matters most this spring.
