Lionel Messi has been awarded the 2019 Ballon d’Or. The Argentinian striker won it for the sixth time in his career on Monday night in a star-studded ceremony in Paris.

The last time Messi had won the award was in 2015, following a season where Barcelona won a treble with Lio, as usual, playing a key role. This year he had strong competition from Liverpool defender, but that wasn’t enough for the Dutch center-back to dethrone Messi.
Van Dijk clinched the Champions League this season, which came after Liverpool beat Barça with an epic 4-3 aggregate comeback semi-final win at Anfield on the way.
Nevertheless, people can make the case for Messi with his performances throughout 2018-2019 and what has been played in this current campaign, scoring no less than 47 goals while also providing 19 assists in 55 matches.
He also won La Liga, the Spanish Super Copa, the Pichichi for Spain’s top scorer, the golden boot for being Europe’s leading marksman and was the Champions League’s most successful scorer with 12 in total last term.
