Megan Rapinoe is well known for the way he takes advantage of the spotlight to discuss things that matter in the current world.

The USWNT’s star called out big stars after getting awarded the Ballon d’Or, including the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the two biggest figures in the football world at this moment.

Rapinoe won the Women’s Ballon d’Or on Monday and she didn’t miss the chance to call out a number of influential male footballers for their lack of action in the fight for equality.

The USA international told France Football per Indy100:

“I want to shout: ‘Cristiano (Ronaldo), Leo (Messi), Zlatan (Ibrahimovic) – help me!”

The 34-year-old’s argues that the trio are superstars on a global scale but aren’t vocal about the issues in professional football.

“These big stars don’t engage in anything when there are so many problems in football!

“Are they afraid of losing everything? They might believe that but it’s not true… Who would banish Messi or Ronaldo from the football world for speaking out against racism or sexism?”

Messi is not the most outspoken player when it comes to off-field matters, but Ronaldo and Zlatan have expressed their opinion against racial abuse in the past. However, Zlatan made some comments back in 2013 that gives you a hint of what he thinks about all of this.

Zlatan told Expressen newspaper per ESPN:

“With all respect for what the ladies have done, and they’ve done it fantastically well, you can’t compare men’s and women’s football. Give it up, it’s not even funny.”

Sexism is a delicate topic at any stage of life and football is not exempt from that. Luckily, women have been getting more and more attention in recent times and the things that big figures like Rapinoe are doing will change things sooner than later for the ladies.
