With Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis, the Mavericks have a core that will compete for years to come. Nearly 6 years ago, the Mavs almost had a deal in place for another talented core.
In an appearance on Zach Lowe’s The Lowe Post podcast on ESPN, Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated revealed the rumors of a potential pairing between Chris Paul and Dwight Howard in Dallas during 2013 free-agency.
“I really think that they, Chris and Dwight, basically wink, wink said they were going to Dallas, from what I’ve heard, and that Dwight backed out,” Spears said, as quoted by NBC Sports. “Word on the street. But we hear a lot of stories. That’s one story I’ve heard.”
Apparently, that wasn’t the first time Paul and Howard were linked to the Mavericks, as both players were eligible for free agency in 2012 but chose to opt into the final year of their contracts.
With Dirk, CP3, and Howard, the Mavericks would have been squarely in the Championship conversation. Unfortunately, that scenario never materialized, as Howard went to Houston and Paul re-signed with the Clippers.
Neither Howard or Paul has won a ring since then, and both are on the tail end of their careers. No doubt, it was a missed opportunity — and one we’ll have to leave to our dreams.
