When Kahwi Leonard raised the Finals MVP trophy this past June, it started the beginning of a conversation that is still going on today, months later. Has Kawhi finally overtaken LeBron as the best player in the game?
Through this narrative, there are feelings of tension and “war” between the two superstar forwards. But is it really a rivalry?
According to Shannon Sharpe, it shouldn’t classify as one.
Bird-Magic was a rivalry. Peyton-Brady was a rivalry. KD-LeBron is a rivalry. LeBron-Kawhi is not a rivalry.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Kawhi and LeBron wouldn’t be ones to sit down and have a meal together, even if there is a mutual level of respect. But Kawhi has always been a passive person, not one for “rivalries” or scandals, or any sort of off-court, non-basketball related theatrics.
And while some claim he has taken over Bron’s place at the throne, there doesn’t seem to be the same level of animosity that there was between Bron and Durant, or even Bron and Steph.
It might be Kawhi’s personality, it might be the lack of history, but Sharpe doesn’t sense a rivalry between LeBron James and Kawhi. Something tells me that he isn’t the only one, either.
