Fadeaway World

Next summer might be one for years, as football fans expect a lot of movements in the off-season. Although they’re waiting for big-money moves, the summer window could see a lot of good players joining new teams for free.

In a world where the best talent in football can cost a team £200 million, there are assets up for grabs for free, something uncommon to see in football nowadays. Juventus have made this practice art, but they won’t be the only ones picking up players whose contract just finished.

That’s why we’re about to talk about the 10 best players who will become free agents at the end of the season.

Honorable Mention: Eric Bailly, Fernandinho, Thomas Meunier, Nacho, Jose Callejon, Giorgio Chiellini

10. Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen was one of Tottenham’s captains alongside Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, but the Belgium defender doesn’t seem so happy in North London right now. He and Christian Eriksen formed a trio of players that wanted to leave the club with Alderweireld, but Toby signed a new contract.

Now Vertonghen is the one figuring out his future with the Spurs. He’s been followed by Serie A giants Inter Milan, so if he can’t get a deal done with the Lillywhites, the Nerazzurri would be happy to welcome him.

9. Blaise Matuidi

Blaise Matuidi was great with Paris Saint-Germain, which led Juventus to make a run for him. He’s been good for the Bianconeri, becoming a regular starter under Massimiliano Allegri and Maurizio Sarri.

However, the Frenchman could be looking for a new challenge out of Italy and Manchester United have been linked with a move for him. They could lose Paul Pogba next summer, which could open the door for a potential arrival of Matuidi.

8. Nemanja Matic

Following his great tenure with Chelsea, Nemanja Matic failed to deliver at Manchester United, being relegated to the bench at this moment. He’s still a quality player that can be good wherever he plays, and there are suitors for his services.

His deal with the Red Devils is set to expire next summer, and Inter Milan with Antonio Conte, as well as Tottenham Hotspur have shown their interest in the Serbian midfielder. He could leave Manchester in January, so it’ll be interesting to see where he lands.

7. Mario Gotze

The German winger hasn’t had the best tenure with Borussia Dortmund following his return from Bayern Munich. Gotze struggled with plenty of injuries over the last couple of seasons and was never able to recover his level.

He’s trying to do so now and if Dortmund let him go next year, his new club is uncertain. He’s been linked a lot with Liverpool given his relationship with Jurgen Klopp, but his injury history and fitness issues make things hard for him and any side interested in a move for the 27-year-old.

6. Christian Eriksen

A lot has been said about Christian Eriksen and the only certain thing now is that he doesn’t plan to continue with Tottenham once his deal is finished. Eriksen is keen to leave North London after his contract expires, and rumors around him see the light every day.

Clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus have all been linked with the Danish playmaker. These three could be set for war to get the signature of one of the best midfielders in European football.

5. Dries Mertens

It’s not crazy to say Dries Mertens has been one of the best offensive players in the old continent for quite some time now. The Belgium international doesn’t have as much press as his fellow countrymen Eden Hazard or Kevin De Bruyne, but he’s shown over and over he’s a great player with Napoli.

His deal is set to expire next year, and Napoli’s president Aurelio de Laurentiis hasn’t shown any signs of wanting to keep the Belgian onboard. Clubs like Arsenal and even Bayern Munich have shown interest in the winger, who could be a great addition to any side.

4. Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani is one of the best strikers in Europe right now after all the good things he did with Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain, becoming a symbol at the Parc des Princes. The Uruguayan striker lived a great time in the French capital, but now it’s time to call it quits.

He’s been linked with Juventus, who were hoping to get him for free next year. Yet, they have big competition from La Liga side Atletico Madrid. Los Rojiblancos look closer to strike a deal for Cavani every day, but PSG won’t let their star go just like that.

3. Willian

Willian Borges could be leaving this list soon, as the Brazilian winger is playing his best football under Frank Lampard. He was linked with a move away from Chelsea, but his recent performances have made everybody change their minds.

Barcelona were one of the clubs that sounded interested in the 31-year-old, but those rumors have vanished given his great moment at Stamford Bridge. If he leaves for free next summer, that would be a big loss for Chelsea.

2. David Silva

Veteran playmaker David Silva is set to call it quits with Manchester City once this campaign is over. The Spaniard midfielder has enjoyed a terrific tenure at the Etihad Stadium, becoming one of the biggest figures of the team, lifting plenty of trophies in the process.

The Magician is 33 and still got it, but he’s set to leave the Citizens and look for a new challenge somewhere else. He was linked with MLS’ new side Inter Miami as their first marquee signing, but nothing has happened so far. This guy is great and can do a lot of good things on the pitch, so whichever team gets his services will be an automatic winner.

1. Luka Modric

It’s crazy to think about Luka Modric leaving Madrid, but this is football and anything can happen. We already saw what happened with Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2018, and Modric could take the same way as the Portuguese.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner was linked with Inter Milan at some point last season, and the Nerazzurri could go for this signature next summer. Besides, a return to Tottenham has been rumored, as well, so if Madrid decides to pursue a new midfielder or give more opportunities to their young players, Modric could be leaving the Bernabeu next summer.
