As their respective clubs get ready to battle on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho are making headlines for their entertaining comments before the big game. Liverpool and Tottenham will clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the best game of the weekend.
However, that doesn’t seem to bother Mou and Klopp, who made some fun comments in their press conferences. First, it was Mou who invited everybody who didn’t believe Spurs could beat Liverpool to leave the room. Then, Klopp had the funniest exchange of the week, when he asked a journalist to research what position Mourinho used to play.
These two men made their way to the top of the coaching world with hard work after having little playing experience at the highest level.
Mourinho played a handful of matches in the 1980s with the likes of Rio Ave and Belenenses, while Klopp turned out over 300 times of Mainz in an 11-year career that was spent in the 2.Bundesliga.
Things are different now, as these are two of the best bosses in football. However, Klopp was curious when a reporter asked him who was the better player during their active days.
“Does anyone know what position Mourinho played? Don’t blame me if you don’t know it,” Klopp said, via Goal.
“Does anybody know? I think he was a goalkeeper…
“I want to know now. Come on, Google it. We have time.”
After he was told there was no time, the former Dortmund boss retorted: “I have time!”
A quick Google showed that Mourinho was a midfielder, with Klopp coyly replying: “Sorry, Jose! He did play in goal in that charity game, though, so…”
Mou indeed played as a midfielder, while Klopp had a more varied career. He started playing upfront before going back to become a defender, playing mostly as a right-back.
Now he’s focused on Liverpool, as the Reds try to keep their good pace in the Premier League. Liverpool have racked up 19 wins from their opening 20 fixtures of the season and are more than a year undefeated in the competition.
