Lionel Messi’s contract with FC Barcelona is set to expire at the end of the season. However, Josep Maria Bartomeu wants him to stay with the Blaugranas until the end of his career.

Messi, however, has flirted back and forth with the possibility of one day playing for Newells Old Boys, his hometown club, even though he’s admitted that it isn’t as easy as it sounds.

But now that Javier Mascherano has turned the page and went back to Argentina to play for Estudiantes de La Plata, he thinks Messi could also join his beloved club once if that’s what he really wants:

“Anything can happen in the world of football and it depends on his desire to play in Argentina. There’s also the family aspect when he decides to live over here. These are personal issues and no one else can influence them. If he decides to come here in the future, it’d be a huge jump in quality for our league and the country,” Mascherano told Diario Sport.

Moreover, Estudiantes are also trying to bring Marcos Rojo back to Argentina from Manchester United, and the Argentinean league has always been home for some of the legends that left the country earlier on his career, like Carlos Tevez.

Messi is unlikely to leave Barcelona, at least for the time being, so he’s almost a lock to sign a contract extension at some point in the season or the summer.

However, there’s always going to be a lot of speculation regarding the final days of his playing career, with David Beckham hinting at his interest to sign him for his Inter Miami one day.

Truth to be told, Messi could play until his late 40s and still make a huge impact in the pitch, so hopefully, he’ll continue to play for many years to come.
