Luka Doncic is playing his second year in the NBA and he’s already doing great things with his Dallas Mavericks. He’s expected to finish this year in the top 5 for the MVP award after all the great stuff he’s done with the Mavs.

He’s 21 years old right now, but it feels like Luka is a veteran in the league already. Well, there is a reason for that. He’s been touted as the next big thing since he was a teenager when he played in the youth teams of Real Madrid in Spain. NBA front-office insider Amin Elhassan revealed he first heard about Doncic when the guard was only 15 years and he was already the best player on Real Madrid.

During an appearance on Doug & Wolf, Elhassan revealed that Doncic usually was called to play with the first team since he was the best player on the team, but he was unaware of that (3.30-minute mark).

The first time I heard about Luka Doncic I was talking to a player that I knew who signed for Real Madrid. I asked him how is it going.

It’s great, we got to meet Cristiano Ronaldo, we went to the game and I got a free Audi, cause they’re the sponsor of the team, and by the way the best player on the team isn’t even on the team.
I said what. He said.

The best player on the team is this 15-year-old kid. He’s on the JV squad. Every once in a while they call him up to varsity. He plays garbage time here and there and right now he’s better than everybody on the team. And all the players know it and all the coaches know it and the only person who doesn’t know it yet is the kid.

And the kid was Luka Doncic.

Now Doncic is doing his thing in the NBA, expected to be one of the faces of the league in the future and one of the best foreigners to play in the league. Again, he’s only 21 and is already dominating the association. Nobody knows what’s next for him and where his game is going to take him.

The Mavericks have reasons to be excited about their future. They found a great player in Doncic and he’s confirming all the good things people said about him when he was just a teenager in Spain.
