The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in possession of the best record in the NBA. They are 11-3, and they are on top of the Western Conference. It seems as though they are continuing their hot pace from last season, and they look more dominant than ever before. Having LeBron James and Anthony Davis on a roster is a match made in heaven; their skill sets complement each other, and they have great chemistry.
The Los Angeles Lakers are currently the best team in the NBA, even with James Harden’s trade to the Brooklyn Nets. They are deep throughout their roster and have solid players at every position. The Los Angeles Lakers are a well-rounded team and will be in contention for the NBA championship. They have an elite roster and are the best overall team in the NBA.
The Los Angeles Lakers Have Elite Depth
During the offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers added a few players to replace the important ones that left. Rajon Rondo, Dwight Howard, and Danny Green were all crucial to the Lakers winning the 2020 NBA title. An important new piece for the Los Angeles Lakers is Montrezl Harrell, the reigning 6MOTY. Harrell is currently averaging 13.8 PPG and 7.4 RPG off the bench. He is a tenacious rebounder who can grab rebounds over larger players while being mobile enough to keep up with smaller players. Harrell is also athletic enough to score inside, and with talented playmakers on the team, he is in a position to get many easy baskets. Harrell’s inside game is elite, and on the defensive end, he is known for his hustle and effort.
Dennis Schroder is an intriguing point guard who was added via trade from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Last season on the Thunder, Schroder averaged 18.9 PPG and 4.0 APG. This year, with other scorers on the Los Angeles Lakers, he has decreased his scoring to 14.1 PPG but upped his APG to a good mark of 4.8. Schroder is the secondary playmaker for the Los Angeles Lakers behind LeBron James and is the third scoring option on the team. Schroder is a good fit on the roster, as he can provide a little bit of everything on the offensive end. Schroder is a proven veteran who can fit a large role on the team at the PG position.
The Lakers also have some elite shooters: Marc Gasol (38.1%), Wesley Matthews (39.0%), and Kyle Kuzma (40.0%) are all shooting at great percentages from beyond the arc. They also have Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who is a solid two-way wing, and one who is shooting an unsustainable 55.3% from 3PT range. LeBron James and Anthony Davis do well with players who can space the floor. The presence of two superstars is bound to open up the floor for a lot of players, and it seems as though the team’s high overall 3PT percentage is a result of that.
The core is also solid defensively: Talen Horton-Tucker and Alex Caruso are solid defensive guards and passable floor spacers. Dwight Howard’s inside athletic presence is going to be missed, but Marc Gasol is a former DPOY who can lock up big centers. While he is not in his prime, his defensive acumen is still there. The Los Angeles Lakers currently have one of the most complete supporting casts in the NBA, and their players look ready to win a championship.
LeBron James And Anthony Davis Work Well Together
When the Los Angeles Lakers traded for Anthony Davis, it was easy to see their pathway to success. Anthony Davis has an elite skill set: he can catch lobs, create his own shot, and has the ability to shoot at a solid rate from beyond the arc. He is currently shooting 37.1% from 3PT range, a career-high. Davis also is extremely good at defense having great length and rim protection. Anthony Davis is averaging 1.3 SPG and 1.8 BPG, showing his versatility on the defensive end on the inside and the perimeter. Anthony Davis is a complete power forward for the modern era, and he has shown it by his success winning next to LeBron James. Anthony Davis’ two-way impact is huge for the Lakers, and he is the anchor for the Los Angeles defense.
LeBron James is still himself. Even at 36, he hasn’t yet started declining. He is a perennial MVP candidate, and could possibly win the award this year. James is currently averaging 24.1 PPG, 8.1 RPG, and 7.7 APG. His assists and scoring are down from last season, but that isn’t due to any form of skill loss. The Lakers have a deep roster, and LeBron James doesn’t have to carry as much of the offensive load. Despite his slightly lower numbers, LeBron James has shown the ability to take over when needed. LeBron James is also shooting a great 38.2% from 3PT range, showing his shooting ability, but also reflecting perhaps the lessened defensive attention that he gets due to the increase of scoring sources on the roster.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis are a super synergistic duo: LeBron James’ playmaking allows Anthony Davis to play off of him, but Davis also has the ability to take over scoring-wise. Davis is a perfect target for James’ playmaking since he can score from anywhere. Likewise, LeBron James probably benefits from another big scorer on the team. Davis and James are both elite basketball minds, and they’ve figured out a great way to work together: a lot of the time, they seem like they are on the exact same wavelength.
The Los Angeles Lakers Have The Best Roster In The NBA
The Los Angeles Lakers don’t have the most star power in the NBA, but they clearly have the best team in the NBA. The Los Angeles Lakers took two superstars and surrounded them with elite role players, who are hungry to get wins. They aren’t a superteam, but they are a team that is deep and works well together. Dennis Schroder and Montrezl Harrell were additions that no-one expected during the off-season: but those are the types of additions that separate good GMs from bad ones. Rob Pelinka did a great job surrounding his stars with the pieces needed to win a championship.
The Los Angeles Lakers got better during free agency, and their record reflects the roster’s overall ability. They look every bit as dominant as they were during the 2019-20 championship season. They have a great defensive team and plenty of firepower on the offensive end. They have the best depth in the league and two superstars: but the key here is LeBron James. You never bet against LeBron James, even against overwhelming odds. The Los Angeles Lakers are definitely one of the favorites to win it all during the 2020-21 season.
