The Houston Rockets are reportedly interested in acquiring Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker, signaling their intent to transform from a surprise contender into a legitimate powerhouse in the Western Conference. The Rockets, currently sitting at 26-12 and second in the West, have emerged as one of the league’s most impressive teams this season.

However, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon on The Hoop Collective Podcast, Houston has made it known they are “fans” of Booker and could pursue the star guard if the Suns decide to entertain trade offers. The Rockets’ remarkable start to the 2024-25 season has been driven by a balanced roster featuring both seasoned veterans and emerging young stars.

Key offseason acquisitions like Fred VanVleet, Dillon Brooks, and Jeff Green have provided stability and leadership, while the team’s youthful core—including Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., and Amen Thompson—has developed into a dynamic and cohesive unit. Houston’s mix of talent has propelled them to a level of competitiveness not seen since their 65-win campaign in 2017-18.

Despite this success, Houston is not content to stand pat. The front office appears intent on capitalizing on their current momentum, and acquiring a player of Devin Booker’s caliber would elevate the Rockets into the NBA’s elite tier. With Booker averaging 24.9 points, 6.9 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game this season, his scoring and playmaking would provide an immediate upgrade to Houston’s offensive firepower.

The Phoenix Suns, in stark contrast to the Rockets, have struggled to maintain consistency. Sitting at 19-20 and 11th in the Western Conference, the Suns are teetering on the edge of playoff contention despite the star-studded trio of Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal. Phoenix has faced difficulties integrating their new-look roster, compounded by injuries and a lack of depth. Their financial constraints and lack of draft capital until 2031 further complicate their ability to improve the team.

Given the Suns’ precarious position, a potential rebuild or retooling could become an option if the current core fails to deliver. Houston could leverage this opportunity, offering draft capital and young talent to entice Phoenix into a deal.

The Rockets hold several future first-round picks originally owned by the Suns, thanks to previous trades involving Brooklyn and Phoenix. This unique situation positions Houston as a natural trade partner if the Suns opt to explore a significant roster shakeup.

While the Rockets’ interest in Booker is clear, acquiring him would be far from straightforward. Booker is the Suns’ franchise cornerstone, and trading him would likely signify the start of a full-scale rebuild. Phoenix has publicly stated their intent to retain Booker and Durant as foundational pieces, making any trade involving Booker highly unlikely during the season.

Moreover, integrating a high-usage player like Booker into Houston’s roster could disrupt the chemistry that has fueled their success. Jalen Green, the team’s current leading scorer, has thrived as the focal point of the offense. Adding Booker might necessitate adjustments in roles and responsibilities, potentially complicating the team’s dynamic.

Despite the challenges, the Rockets’ pursuit of Booker underscores their commitment to building a championship-caliber team. By signaling their interest early, Houston ensures they are positioned to act if circumstances in Phoenix change. While a trade during the current season remains unlikely, the Rockets could revisit the idea in the offseason, especially if they fall short in their playoff aspirations.

For now, Houston’s focus remains on continuing their impressive run and solidifying their status as a top contender. However, their reported interest in Devin Booker is a clear indication that the Rockets are thinking big, with an eye on building a roster capable of competing for an NBA title.
