Cooper Flagg’s Mother Sets $180K Limit For His First Car Purchase After Signing $62 Million Rookie Deal

Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg is set to earn millions in the NBA, and his mother, Kelly, wants him to show some restraint when it comes to spending. Mother and son sat down for an interview with Chime, where they were asked about the approach to financial progress.

“I’m not a big spender,” Cooper said. “Obviously, I’m excited to get my own vehicle.”

Before Cooper could continue, Kelly, who played college basketball at Maine, quickly interjected.

“Do not buy a Bugatti right away,” Kelly stated.

Cooper smiled but did not make any promises at that moment. The 18-year-old does seem to listen to what his mother has to say, though, and made it clear later that he wasn’t going to go crazy.

Mother and son were asked what’s the most he should be spending on a car, and their figures weren’t too far off. Cooper went with $200,000, while Kelly stated $180,000 is all he should spend.

“People might assume that I might buy like a sports car, but I don’t see myself doing that,” Cooper stated.

While there is nothing wrong as such in buying a sports car, you like the mindset that Cooper has. He had been the consensus No. 1 pick for the 2025 NBA Draft for quite some time, and despite knowing about the millions coming his way, he wasn’t tempted to go overboard.

We have unfortunately seen one too many cases of NBA players squandering their millions, but that doesn’t seem likely to happen in this case.

Cooper has now signed a four-year, $62.7 million contract with the Mavericks. As for what else the teenager will be spending on apart from the car, it appears a golf simulator is high on the list. The teenager termed it a must-have for his new home, along with a hot tub, which Kelly suggested.

While Cooper has a lot to look forward to off the court, he’s most excited about stepping onto the court for the Mavericks. We briefly saw him in the Summer League, where he averaged 20.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game.

The Mavericks shut down Cooper after just two games, which was a shame, but they didn’t want to take any risks. We’ll next see him in action during preseason.

Cooper’s Summer League performances certainly didn’t bring his stock down. Blake Griffin has hailed him as the most complete NBA prospect in years, and he is the big favorite to win Rookie of the Year. It’ll be a shocker if he doesn’t take home the award.

His passion for the sport was ignited after witnessing the high-octane offense of the Steve Nash-led Phoenix Suns. Among the Suns, Shawn Marion stood out to Gautam as an all-time underrated NBA player. Marion’s versatility as a defender and his rebounding prowess, despite being just 6’7”, impressed Gautam immensely. He admired Marion’s finishing ability at the rim and his shooting, despite an unconventional jump shot, believing that Marion’s skill set would have been even more appreciated in today’s NBA.This transformative experience not only deepened his love for basketball but also shaped his approach to sports writing, enabling him to connect with readers through vivid storytelling and insightful analysis.
