The 2026 NBA offseason has been one for the ages, and even the more modest moves could have major implications on next year’s title race. In Cleveland, the Cavaliers have struck out on all the best free agents, but they didn’t let that be an excuse for complacency this summer.

While it wasn’t the name most fans had in mind, the Cavaliers have announced the acquisition of veteran point guard Tre Mann. He arrives as part of a two-team trade with the Hornets in exchange for Dennis Schroder (and cash), who heads to his 12th team in 13 years.

“The Cleveland Cavaliers are trading Dennis Schroder and cash to the Charlotte Hornets for Tre Mann,” reported Shams Charania on Friday. “The Hornets, Cavaliers, and Schroder’s rep Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports worked for the last couple of months on the deal – which also provides Cleveland with flexibility to continue pursuing roster moves and tax savings to keep them well under the second apron.”

After finishing fourth in the East last season and making a run to the Conference Finals, the Cavaliers believe they can contend for a championship if everyone stays healthy. With a core of Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen, the Cavs have top-end depth and talent to keep up with any opponent. If anything, it’s their depth that leaves much to be desired.

On paper, Schroder is the ideal spark plug for Cleveland off the bench, but he struggled in the rotation last season, averaging 8.2 points, 23 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game on 40.1% shooting. While he was serviceable in his role, Schroder is owed roughly $30 million over the next two years, leading the Cavs to shop for a potential replacement.

With career averages of 8.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game, Tre Mann will likely not move the needle for the Cavs, but he gives them some financial flexibility thanks to his $8 million team option in 2027-28. He could play a similar role off the bench without demanding the ball or disrupting the offense. Additionally, he’s also a capable defender, giving the Cavs a crucial bonus on that end.

Meanwhile, the Hornets land a tested backup point guard to play behind Coby White. In the wake of the LaMelo Ball trade, the Hornets are in a mini rebuild, and they have nothing to lose by taking on a proven veteran like Schroder. He can help them keep the offense flowing and speed the development of his younger teammates. If nothing else, his experience, veteran habits, and consistent scoring will make him a fine addition to the rotation. The only catch is that they aren’t in a position to compete, meaning this stop may not last for long.

Ultimately, while this trade is relatively small in scale, it could make a bigger difference than we think. For the Cavaliers specifically, this trade has opened up roster flexibility while giving them a solid two-way player off the bench. Mann may not be LeBron James, but he’s exactly who the Cavs need right now in this current CBA era.
