If you ask most experts around the league, the Golden State Warriors did not have a particularly good offseason. What started as plans to add another co-star next to Stephen Curry eventually devolved into running it back with the same roster that just won 37 games.
Despite this reality, Steph is showing no signs of breaking. In a recent courtside chat at a Valkyries game, the Warriors legend was asked for his thoughts about the upcoming campaign. Instead of complaining about the lack of improvements, he expressed excitement over the opportunity for a fresh start.
“I’m excited,” said Curry. “We’re going to take advantage of the rest of the offseason, but I think there’s a lot of health coming back. For me, I’m blessed to play this game. I feel good taking advantage of the offseason, and when September rolls around, hopefully these ladies are going to be celebrating some crazy things at the end of their season and roll right into ours.”
The Warriors had ambitions to sign some of the summer’s top free agents, but they had to resort to re-signing their own players after being rejected again and again. As currently constructed, the Warriors recognize they are no longer title contenders, but Steph intends to get them as far as he can.
At 38, with averages of 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game on 46.5% shooting, Steph can still play at an elite level, and it’s no secret that he desires to play meaningful, highly competitive basketball. By himself, it’s enough to make the Warriors relevant, but they will likely need more help before they can truly keep up with the NBA elites. It could be why Steph (and his teammate Gary Payton II) was seen at the game with Dalen Terry, who is currently an unrestricted free agent.

The Warriors’ interest in Dalen Terry is unclear, but some took his presence at the game as a sign of his ties to Golden State. True or not, he would make a decent and affordable backup point guard behind Steph. In 48 games last season, Terry averaged 3.7 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game on 43.4% shooting.
Whether it’s Terry or someone else entirely, the Warriors can still add some role players in free agency, and many expect them to. Still, their best hope for a successful season is through good health and internal improvement. Fortunately, the Warriors are headed toward a positive outcome on the injury front, with Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody moving toward full health. Steph, too, is healthy again after missing 39 games last season.
At this point, it’s clear the Warriors will never relive their glory days, but that doesn’t mean Steph is ready to quit. In fact, going into year 18, he’s more committed and locked in than ever to helping the Warriors win as many games as possible. There are no guarantees, but if they work hard to maximize their chemistry now, it could be enough to surprise a lot of people next season.
