The Miami Heat‘s offseason has been defined by the landmark trade to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, effectively positioning the Heat as a powerhouse in the East. As Miami continues to find ways to improve its roster, being linked to several players in the process, recent updates suggest that free agent center Nick Richards may also be on its radar.

Although it is still early in the offseason, the Heat’s key players have been hard at work. From Giannis Antetokounmpo, who prioritized training with his new team over representing his country this summer, to players like Bam Adebayo and Davion Mitchell, Miami’s core players seem to be fast-tracking the chemistry-building process.

Some familiar faces have been spotted at these workouts. While Heat rookie Tre Donaldson is one of them, the recurring appearances of Nick Richards have drawn more interest, as recent footage of Richards donning the Heat training gear sparked some speculation within the community.

For the most part, making assumptions based on this footage is relatively easy, but there have been rumors floating around the virtual space linking Nick Richards to the Heat. To that end, sources like Rob Murrows have even reported that there is already an agreement that Richards will sign with the Heat, though there has been no official communication or confirmation on this front.

As things stand, the Heat boast an interesting roster. But it is also evident that they need some upgrades. So, is adding a player like Nick Richards a wise decision?

The Heat Could Benefit From Adding Nick Richards

Since the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, there have been mixed reviews about the Miami Heat’s potential next season. While some view the Heat as contenders, others have raised valid concerns about the team’s lack of perimeter shooting depth, a critical factor that could restrict them from fulfilling their potential. Apart from this, Miami also looks thin in the frontcourt, specifically the big man rotation.

Barring the superstar duo of Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo, which may be the most formidable frontcourt pairing in the NBA, the Heat’s center rotation is quite limited. With Bobby Portis coming off the bench and Vladislav Goldin on a two-way contract, the Heat must address their lack of big man depth. In this context, signing a player like Nick Richards seems quite sensible.

Richards may not be the most exciting signing on paper, but the veteran big man has proven himself reliable over the last few seasons. Richards positions himself as a traditional center boasting solid rebounding skills and the athleticism to serve as a viable lob threat. Although he attempted to expand his offensive arsenal with more shots from beyond the arc last season, he has more value as an inside threat.

In 48 appearances last season, Richards averaged 5.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks per game while shooting 51.2% from the field. Although this doesn’t stand out, in 20 appearances for the Chicago Bulls (22.4 MPG), the 28-year-old posted 9.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per game on 52.3% shooting from the field.

It is abundantly clear from his stats that the big man is quite capable of contributing when given an opportunity to play. When considering the lack of viable big men on Miami’s bench, there is every reason to believe he could earn enough playing time to make an impact, especially during minutes without Bam Adebayo on the floor.

For the most part, adding a player like Nick Richards would make a lot of sense for Miami. Although he doesn’t address their perimeter shooting issues, Richards gives the Heat the size they need on the inside to remain competitive on the glass. Given that Miami has three free roster spots and a payroll of $199.6 million, the Heat could easily sign Richards on a minimum deal while staying below the first apron.

Currently, however, Miami’s free agency decisions appear to be held up by Klay Thompson’s ongoing buyout discussions. Although there is merit to waiting, with teams like the Lakers showing an interest in Richards, the Heat would benefit from closing this as soon as possible.
