Victor Webanyama hasn’t even played 10 games in his NBA career, but he’s already shown enough to convince some that he’s a legend in the making. After watching Vic drop 38 points on Thursday, former Lakers champion Metta Sandiford-Artest (formerly Metta World Peace) raved about the young star and claimed he has the potential to retire as a 10x champ.
“Wem is winning 10 titles potentially,” wrote Metta. “He might win MVP this year. Definitely 1st team all defense and 1st team all NBA. Potentially the 1st player to be most improved as a rookie.”
Metta failed to elaborate on how a rookie could win most improved player, but it’s possible that the entire post was sarcasm, meant to make fun of the hype and all of the wild predictions people have been making. Even so, the noise may be worth it for a player like this. As we’ve seen in the first four games already, Wembanyama is virtually unguardable when he’s got it going and his dominance extends to both ends of the court. Heading into the in-season tournament, Victor is putting up 20.6 points per game and 8 rebounds on 50% shooting.
Are Expectations Too High For Wemby?
It’s no secret that Victor was touted as the greatest prospect in NBA history and scouts were hyping him up for years before the draft lottery finally revealed where he would land. With the Metropolitans 92, Victor looked really good and very comfortable with his game. After showing out in the Summer League weeks later, the hype only intensified as the young star started drawing comparisons to Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and even Wilt Chamberlain.
To date, Victor isn’t close to reaching the heights of those players and it would be unfair to hold him up to those standards when he’s still just a few games into his NBA journey. Even so, Wemby is embracing the spotlight with a sense of confidence we rarely see from a 19-year-old, and the more we get to see of his game, the more that it validates all of the claims made about his superstar potential. for now, though, it might be best to pump the breaks until he actually achieves something of substance in the NBA.
The Spurs Are On The Rise
Thursday’s victory put the Spurs at above .500 on the season but there’s still a long way to go before anyone considers them contenders. On his own, Wembanyama makes a huge impact on offense and defense, and he makes life substantially easier for his teammates when he’s on the floor getting them good looks. Unfortunately for the Spurs, they still don’t have enough to keep up with the best of the West.
As good as players like Zach Collins and Jeremy Sochan are, Wemby will need more to take this team where they ultimately want to go. For GM Brian Wright, the job falls on him to assemble a proper supporting cast and bring in the help that Wembanyama needs, but that’s obviously much easier said than done.
