The San Antonio Spurs established a legacy of excellence between 1999 and 2014, winning five NBA championships thanks to NBA legends like Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Kawhi Leonard.

Having drafted a generational talent in Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, a new chapter filled with success is on the cards. And Parker has thrown down the gauntlet for the young Frenchman, setting the highest goal for him.

“Victor, just wanted to give you a message, just wanted to say congrats,” Tony Parker said in a prerecorded message for the Player’s Tribune. “I know you wanted to go to San Antonio, I know you wanted to play for the Spurs, and now it’s gonna happen. And I hope you’re going to change basketball for the best. And you’re going to live up to all those expectations.

“Your agent showed me a crazy video the morning of your draft. You said you wanted to go to the Spurs. So now it’s happening. So now it’s your turn to bring us a championship.”

Tony Parker, a 4-time NBA champion and a former Finals MVP, saying something like this to Wembanyama is a huge thing. He knows what it takes to win it all, and Parker also knows Wembanyama from before, so he wouldn’t say something like this if he didn’t believe it was possible. Ultimately, it will be up to Wembanyama to prove him right and continue a legacy of greatness in San Antonio.

Victor Wembanyama Has Been Looking Forward To Being On The San Antonio Spurs

The whole situation feels like destiny, considering that the San Antonio Spurs had two previous No. 1 picks, Tim Duncan, and David Robinson, who both brought championships to the city. Wembanyama is aware of what the culture is like within the franchise, noting their history of winning after they landed the No. 1 overall pick and became the favorites to draft him.

“San Antonio is synonymous with winning. On lottery night, when the Spurs got the No. 1 pick, I was feeling lucky that they got the pick as a franchise that has that culture and experience in winning.”

Gregg Popovich is still the Head Coach and he is the winningest coach in NBA history. The Spurs have good young pieces like Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, and Jeremy Sochan around Wembanyama as well. While a championship may take some time, it may not be as far away as some might expect either.
