Despite their second-round collapse, the New York Knicks overachieved this season with Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle, and RJ Barrett at the helm. With up-and-down play throughout the regular season and more inconsistency from Julius Randle, it seems the writing was on the wall even before the NBA playoffs began.

But after showing so much promise, the Knicks are now in a position to move up in the hierarchy and finally acquire the big-name star they’ve been waiting for. According to Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus, that guy is believed to be Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns.

“Several NBA sources over the past couple of years have expressed they believe the Knicks will ultimately end up with Karl-Anthony Towns, a CAA client. If so, would the Knicks want to add Towns to complement their top three or send out Randle or Barrett? No one polled expects Brunson to be available, but sourcing was of mixed opinion on what’s next for New York.”

It’s no surprise that Towns has been connected to the Knicks. Over the years, the Timberwolves have failed to make the leap with KAT and now that Anthony Edwards has emerged as the franchise star, Towns is suddenly more expendable than he’s ever been.

While Towns may not be the name Knicks fans were hoping to hear, his offensive skillset would make a nice pairing next to Jalen Brunson, and the two of them together might be able to take this Knicks team further than they’ve gone in decades.

What Would A Towns Trade Look Like For The Knicks?

If you’re the Knicks, how much would you be willing to give up for KAT? As a young big man with skills around the rim and on the perimeter, he’s clearly one of the most expensive trade targets out there. Still, it might be worth it for the Knicks to shake things up, especially if it means they can move on from Randle.

“This trade would get the New York Knicks two All-Star-level players that are insanely talented,” wrote Fadeaway World’s Lee Tran. “Karl Anthony-Towns is the best 3PT shooting big man in the league, while Brandon Ingram is an elite three-level shot creator who can help the team close games. Here is the three-team framework that would send both to the Knicks.

New York Knicks Receive: Karl-Anthony Towns, Brandon Ingram

Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: Julius Randle, Dyson Daniels, 2024 First-Round Pick (NYK)

New Orleans Pelicans Receive: RJ Barrett, Taurean Prince, Derrick Rose, 2023 First-Round Pick (NYK), 2025 First-Round Pick (MIL)

Whatever the Knicks decide to do this summer, they are in a pretty good position overall. Even if they stand PAT and do nothing, they have enough talent and depth to keep the team competitive and keep fans happy. Everything else will come later.
