The Brooklyn Nets are in a state of turmoil once again following Kyrie Irving’s event trade demand. For what feels like the 10th time in the KD/Irving era, the Nets stand on the brink of collapse and guys like Nic Claxton, Joe Harris, and Seth Curry find themselves having to play through all the smoke ahead of the 2023 trade deadline.
You can imagine how such circumstances would be tough for any player to endure, but especially for a Nets team that once held championship aspirations to start the season.
Speaking to the media ahead of their game against the Wizards, Nets coach Jacque Vaughn spoke about Kyrie’s latest move and how it has impacted the team.
Coach Vaughn Gets Real On Kyrie’s Trade Demand
According to Vaughn, he personally reached out to players right after the news went viral this week.
“Yesterday I touched bases with every single player. That was a day for me to get what you need, and mine was to conversate with every single player. I’m not going to speculate on stuff that’s out there that’s been reported. My job is hopefully to stay consistent. Hopefully I’ve been that way with you guys and with our group. And I touched base with our guys every single one of them yesterday.”
Vaughn has been an early candidate for coach of the year the way he got his guys to buy in to the system. Now, he deserves credit for trying to keep the team together amid impossible circumstances.
“There’s a business side to this thing and there’s a human side to this thing,” said Vaughn. “I elected to touch on the human side and check on him as an individual. I’ll leave the business side to (general manager) Sean (Marks) and that group.”
As a team, the Nets are doing their best to keep things under wraps and control the fallout. But as the trade deadline gets closer, the noise will only get louder around Irving.
It’s a sticky situation for the Nets, and for Jacque Vaughn, but nobody is particularly surprised by how things are turning out. For years now, the Nets have been headlined by news stories, controversies, and other distractions.
At this point, it may be better for everyone if the Nets just trade everyone and start from scratch.
