The offseason of 2022 will be remembered for years because of the infamous trade saga between the Brooklyn Nets and Kevin Durant. Various teams put their offseasons on hold to determine whether they had a chance at trading for the disgruntled superstar. The Boston Celtics were one of the leading teams in those trade talks, offering up Jaylen Brown but being unwilling also to give the Nets Marcus Smart.
Brown expressed his disappointment on Twitter after being offered in a KD trade. He is definitely going to be a Celtic after KD decided to stay in Brooklyn. Marcus Smart has revealed how Brown is dealing with the trade rumor and what his mentality for next season is in an exclusive interview with CLNS Media.
“(Brown’s) handled it great,” Smart said. “He walks around with a smile on his face. We actually haven’t even mentioned it when we were together. We were just talking about the upcoming season and getting ourselves ready, but he’s great. He’s handling it as professionally as he can and my advice is, to anybody, don’t forget it’s a business first. When you’re doing business, personal stuff has to go out the window and can’t be the issue, so you can’t look at it like that. If your name is up there in trade talks, I look at it as a compliment. It means teams want you. That’s a good thing. The problem is if your name is not (in rumors), nobody wants you. So that’s how I’m looking at it and that’s how people should look at it. It’s tough, I understand it, but just because it’s going on, you never know. Anything can happen.” (h/t CLNS Media)
Is Jaylen Brown Going To Be Committed To The Celtics?
It is impossible to avoid damage in a situation where one of your star players is not going to be upset after he hears that the team tried trading him. While Durant is an all-world player, Brown was arguably the best player in the Celtics’ 6-game Finals loss to the Golden State Warriors.
It is a business and this bit of attempted business could bite the Celtics back in 2024 if Brown decides to walk from the team as a free agent. While he definitely will be committed to playing well this season and seeing if he and the Celtics could make it back to the Finals, nobody knows whether it is something that could last into another contract between Brown and Boston.
