This is very awkward.
The decision to fire Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey at the conclusion of their disappointing was a shocking one to say the least, but after being swept (again) by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round, it was only a matter of time before Casey's position became vacant.
Casey was ousted as HC after the terrible showing against the Cavs despite leading the Raptors to a franchise-record 59 wins, first place in the East, and a fifth-straight playoff appearance. Because of the way Toronto performed in the regular season, Casey was a frontrunner for Coach of the Year honors all season long, and despite his firing, was still nominated as a contender for the award at the NBA awards show.
That's awkward in and of itself, especially considering he has a high chance of winning it this year. What makes things even worse, however, is the fact the Toronto Raptors official Twitter account congratulated Casey on the nomination.
Uh, has anyone told the social media team they fired this guy like a week ago?
As expected, even if it was a nice -- albeit poorly timed -- gesture towards their former head coach, Twitter had a field day roasting the Raptors.
Regardless, Casey is going to be attending a lot of interviews with other teams this offseason in search of another coaching position and will be one of the hottest free agent coaches on the market, especially if he wins Coach of the Year this season.
