Al Horford Strong Considered Signing With The Thunder Before Picking The Celtics In 2016

It's funny sometimes how much one decision really changes things. Like when the Warriors decided to draft Steph Curry with the 7th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. And when the Thunder elected to trade James Harden over Serge Ibaka to ease the luxury tax. These moments changed things for them and their perspective teams, but also for the rest of the NBA.

Kevin Durant's choice to join the Warriors back in the summer of 2016 is yet another example of one of those game-changing moves.

Maybe less noticed is the decision of Al Horford that same summer, who chose to ink a deal with the Celtics just days before Durant became a Warrior. Had he ended up choosing the Thunder, things could be very different today.

"It was a hectic period for me," Horford said months after moving to Boston. "I didn't say this to him, but I was strongly considering them and just the possibilities of playing under Coach again. Those were realistic things, but at the end of the day I made my decision to be here with Boston."

At the time, the Thunder was reportedly trying to clear roster space to add Horford alongside Russ and Durant. Those three along with Billy Donovan (who coached Horford in college), would obviously be enough for serious title contention.

If you remember, this is the same summer that OKC got beat by the Warriors 4-3 in the Western Conference Finals. One more piece - one guy like Al Horford- probably would have been enough to seal things for them.

Nonetheless, it's a fantasy we can only dream about now. It's hard to say Horford didn't make the right decision in joining the Celtics anyway. Still, that OKC dream-team is probably something we would have all liked to see.
