Anthony Davis was the biggest addition the Los Angeles Lakers made this offseason, and he’s expected to lead the team to do big things next summer alongside LeBron James. Nevertheless, it doesn’t seem so clear that the former New Orleans Pelicans player is ready to commit to the Purple and Gold beyond this season.
He can become an unrestricted free agent next summer if he declines his 2020/21 player option with the Lakers, which is what people expect him to do. By declining his $28.8 million player option, he can make more money on the open market.
During the Lakers’ media day on Friday, AD was asked what he planned to do next summer in free agency, but he didn’t give a clear response. Instead, he limited to say he’s focused on this year and nothing more.
"I just want to focus on this year," Davis said, via USA Today. "The Lakers definitely welcomed me with open arms, and made me feel like this was home. At the same time, it's about what we can do this year. We have a special team and coaching staff, and we're going to do whatever we can to focus on this year and come out victorious."
We saw what happened to Kyrie Irving last season and how he couldn’t keep his promise to remain with the Celtics. Even though he looks very comfortable right now, AD probably doesn’t want to say anything he’s not 100% sure he can do. Still, it would be a great shock if he decides to sign with a different team next summer, but we’ve seen similar cases in the NBA.
As for now, Davis just wants to play ball and take his team to achieve big things in a season that looks very promising for them. We can talk about his free agency later.
