The Los Angeles Lakers were one of the best defensive teams during the 2019-20 season. That's what happens when you put two high IQ superstar players together in LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The Lakers ended up winning the championship off of their defensive ability.
During the recent start of the season, the Lakers flashed their defensive potential in a 120-102 win against the Houston Rockets. Houston Rockets superstar James Harden was held to just 20 points during the game. Lakers star Anthony Davis commented on their defensive situation after the game.
Anthony Davis confirms that the Lakers want to continue playing good defense, probably the defense that won them the championship. Davis said he was going to hold himself accountable: we all know that Davis is a DPOY candidate when healthy, and is extremely versatile defensively. Davis can anchor a defense by himself. However, the Lakers have lost good defensive players like Dwight Howard and Rajon Rondo. They were solid veterans who were good communicators on the defensive end. Dwight Howard also provided an athletic presence protecting the rim.
With Dennis Schroder and Montrezl Harrell, the Lakers were always going to be good on the offensive end. But the questions came on the defensive end. However, Harrell looks like he is back to his pre-bubble level, and Schroder has been solid on the perimeter. The Los Angeles Lakers are a different team this season, but at the core of their efforts is the improvement of their defense. Defense wins championships, and the Lakers are looking for another one to add to the trophy cabinet.
