If you didn't know any better, you might think all is well in Toronto between the Raptors and Kawhi Leonard. When the team took a risk and traded DeMar DeRozan for him over the summer, nobody would have imagined they'd be this good this soon. Boasting an NBA-best 23-8 record, you could make a case they're the best team in the league right now.
Yet, even with their encouraging play, there's a lot of worries and doubt regarding what comes next, as in, this summer, when Kawhi hits the free-agency market. Even after the smiles, the great play, and the rocking fans, the 2x All-Star is apparently still focused on grabbing his ticket to L.A.
"They can't change the geography. They can't change the weather in Toronto. Those were always be things against them in this," said ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski via Real GM. "Home and L.A. has been the focus for Kawhi Leonard through all of this."
Some things you just can't control. It is a brutal reality, but one the Raptors are going to have to face. No matter how good the team is, or how comfortable Kawhi seems, it'll ultimately be the uncontrollable elements that rip him from Canada for good.
Worse still, the team realizes their impending doom through it all. How can they really enjoy the season they're having knowing it will probably all change in a few more months?
