Knicks' fans were optimistic about their chances entering 2019 free agency. With a slew of stars available, a lot of cap space, and a whole lot of noise, they were hoping to form a Championship contender of years of irrelevance.
A couple of months later, and it is clear the Knicks are far from the contenders fand had hoped they be.
But if you ask Bobby Portis, their team might be the next best thing: playoff chasers. He believes the postseason is a realistic goal for the franchise.
"The naysayers, the haters, the people who are doubting us will say that we're crazy … for saying that," Portis told HoopsHype. "But we have a bunch of guys who are coming in each and every day with that log on their shoulder and that's going to push us to become a great team. We have a lot of pieces who can play.
"I think we're loaded at every position. There are two-to-three players who could start at every position. When you have that much talent, that rises the competitiveness and improves the team as a whole."
After striking out on multiple free agents, the Knicks replaced their hopes of signing Kyrie, Kevin Durant, and others with lesser-name additions in Portis, Julius Randle, Elfrid Payton, and Marcus Morris among others. Of course, they will be lead by an exceptional group of youngsters in RJ Barrett, Kevin Knox, and Mitchell Robinson.
Whether or not the Knicks will meet their goals is anyone's guess, but they will continue to be the face of memes and jokes until then.
