Charles Barkley has never shied away from discussing difficult topics. However, one of the most emotional stories he has ever shared came when he revealed that he once considered trying cocaine himself, not to use the drug, but to comprehend why his brother couldn’t break free from addiction. Not to use drugs, but to comprehend why his brother couldn’t break free.
Speaking on the Club Shay Shay podcast, Barkley revealed that his family was deeply affected by his brother Darryl’s addiction. After watching Darryl repeatedly relapse, despite multiple rehab attempts, Barkley became consumed by a question: What could be so powerful that someone would choose drugs over everything else?
“I had a younger brother who was a junkie who died at a young age. When I talk to these young kids, from high school to college, about drugs, I say, ‘Yo, man, it ain’t a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.’ You know, it broke my mom’s heart. It broke my heart for a long time. I said, ‘Yo, man, I don’t understand why you gotta do drugs. I just don’t get it.'”
“And I almost did cocaine one time because, you know, I had put my brother in a bunch of rehabs, and I was like, ‘What the f**k is up with this?’ And I talked to one of my boys. I said, ‘Yo, man, I want you to get me some cocaine.’ He said, ‘Charles, you f**king nuts.’ I said, ‘Man, my brother… he gonna die at some point. And I ain’t never had something so strong that I would give up the NBA or my money, saying, ‘You know, I gotta do drugs.”‘
“John Lucas, who’s a great, great man, said, ‘Chuck, let me tell you something about a junkie. If I put a million dollars in cash on this table and a pile of cocaine over there, or crack, or whatever you want to say, a junkie would not say, ‘Man, I can buy a lot of cocaine with that money. He gonna go right for that pile over there.'”
The NBA legend revealed that he even asked one of his friends to help him find cocaine because he wanted to understand what made it so powerful. He also asked a friend to help him find cocaine, but couldn’t comprehend how someone would sacrifice a career, family, and financial security for drugs.
Thankfully, Barkley never followed through. After speaking with his friend John Lucas, Barkley understood that addiction wasn’t about logic or willpower; it was a disease that destroys everything in its path.
Darryl Barkley battled cocaine addiction for years and was arrested several times on drug-related charges. Charles repeatedly paid for rehab programs in the hope of helping his younger brother recover.
Although Darryl eventually got clean and underwent a heart transplant in 2003 after years of drug abuse severely damaged his heart, the physical toll on his body proved too much to overcome. He died in 2009 after suffering a heart attack at the age of 42.
His death had a profound impact on Charles and his family. Barkley’s mother never recovered, and he still uses the experience as a warning when speaking to young kids.
Today, Barkley shares Darryl’s story to educate people about the dangers of addiction.
