Erik Spoelstra is one of the best coaches currently in the NBA and he has been great for quite a while now. Spoelstra took over as head coach for the Miami Heat in 2008 and has since then boasted an impressive 59.3% win rate. This season he has led the team to the Eastern Conference Finals yet again but it seems like Spo never quite gets the praise he deserves.
A fan pointed out that despite all his success for over a decade, Spoelstra has never won Coach of the Year. Even this time around, despite landing the top seed in the Eastern Conference with a squad that saw players miss significant time with injury, he only finished third in the voting. One look at his resume makes it obvious that Spoelstra should have won it at some point and it's a shame that he hasn't.
Erik Spoelstra’s resume:
- 660 regular season wins
- 11 winning seasons (14 seasons coached)
- 96 playoff wins
- 9x coach of the month
- Top 15 coach of all time
- 5 ECF titles
- 2 NBA titles
The fact that he has never won COTY is purely criminal.
It does seem a bit bizarre that someone who was honored as one of the top 15 coaches of all time has never won Coach of the Year, but it is what it is at this point. Maybe next year he stands a chance at winning it, as it doesn't look like this Heat squad is going anywhere anytime soon.
Spoelstra doesn't seem like the kind to be bothered too much about missing out on an award and he like any coach, would prefer winning the championship over anything else. They have a good chance to do it this season too, after taking a 2-1 lead over the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals.
