Gregg Popovich opened up after Team USA suffered a humbling defeat against France in Tokyo Olympics opener. The European team saw a big chance to beat their stumbling rivals and took it, pulling off a big upset.
The San Antonio Spurs head coach congratulated France for the win, stating that they are a great team who took advantage of the USA's flaws. Evan Fournier dominated the game, finishing with a game-high 28 points.
Pop admitted he was disappointed for the loss but calling this result a surprise is almost disrespectful for France.
"When you lose a game, you're not surprised. You're disappointed. I don't understand the word 'surprised.' That sort of disses the French team, as if we're supposed to beat them by 30. That's a hell of a team."
This was the game to win to start the tournament the best way, but France ruined the USA's plans.
Fournier also spoke after the game, revealing the secret to defeating a team with so much talent.
After losing to Nigeria and Australia in preparation games, Team USA hoped to start this competition with a win against a dangerous rival. France weren't having any of that and pulled off the upset, giving their opponents their first L in the Olympics since 2004. Something must change before the next game if this team wants to complete their revenge tour.
