After the noise from the early days of free agency died down, a majority of interest has been diverted to the remaining free agents on the market. Among these, it is safe to say that LeBron James commands significant attention.
Since announcing his decision to part ways with the Lakers, LeBron James has been viewed as one of the hottest free agents on the market. With several teams lining up as suitors, even at 41, James finds himself in high demand. But where will he go next?
As things stand, many teams have presented a strong case to be considered an ideal landing spot this summer. Realistically, this hasn’t made it easier to deduce his next destination. However, during a recent episode of the “Shump Street Podcast,” LeBron James’ former teammate Iman Shumpert offered some meaningful insight about where the superstar should go next.
“I’m just looking at what I need to look at. If this is about a ring, go to Philly. If this is about selling tickets – Miami. If this is about ending your career the way it should go, go to Cleveland.”
Iman Shumpert narrowed the list of suitors down to three with very simple parameters.
From the perspective of title contention, the Philadelphia 76ers are the most promising. Having acquired Jaylen Brown while already boasting a star-studded core, the 76ers are a legitimate powerhouse and a threat to make it out of the East.
From a sales standpoint, the move to the Miami Heat also seems meaningful. Although Miami’s roster may not have enough to contend for the title, watching James share the floor with Giannis Antetokounmpo for an entire season will be priceless.
Finally, if it is about legacy, going to the Cleveland Cavaliers seems reasonable. From being drafted there to bringing a title to the city, going back to Cleveland for a retirement tour is only appropriate.
The story is certainly the strongest with the Cavs. Having won the NBA title in 2016 with James, thus earning a ticket to the team’s reunion tour in Europe, it only seems fair that Iman Shumpert would convince the superstar to head home. Instead, Shumpert warned James about having a clear motive when it came to joining Cleveland.
“Just don’t go to Cleveland trying to be happy about a win because you’re not going to win there. You’re not going to be happy,” he stated. “This is about legacy, the return tour, this is not about winning, don’t you dare go over there, think it’s rolling with the winners.”
“I don’t know what’s up with them during the playoffs, don’t do it. I’ve been on a team with LeBron when he was frustrated, and he felt like he got too much going on. He’s going to start shipping s–t out of there, man. LeBron works for UPS. I’m telling y’all.”
On paper, the Cleveland Cavaliers have a promising core comprising Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, and Evan Mobley. Although the Cavs have the pieces to compete for the title, as Shumpert mentioned, the team tends to come up short.
While Rich Paul has expressed that James is not going ring chasing this summer, it is hard to believe that the superstar would settle for a team that isn’t in a position to win. In this regard, having experienced playing (and winning) with LeBron James, Shumpert’s concerns about the superstar’s roster demands may be a greater issue for a franchise, especially since the 41-year-old is essentially a short-term addition.
For the most part, Shumpert’s comments hint at expectation management and awareness as critical factors in LeBron James’ decision. Since it is difficult to gauge what James’ true motives are, it is easier to perceive these comments as advice from a former teammate.
