Jerry Reinsdorf Reveals That Michael Jordan Wouldn't Have Played The 1998-99 Season Because Of Injury: "He Cut His Hand With A Cigar-Cutter And Had To Have Surgery."

Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls are synonymous with success, no team since them has come close to replicating the dominance they enjoyed during the 90s. And MJ was the undisputed main man on the team, the biggest superstar in NBA history, so when the Bulls decided to blow up the team that had just completed its second three-peat in 8 years, there were a lot of questions about that decision.

Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf has maintained that he did try to bring Phil Jackson back to the team despite General Manager Jerry Krause being set against the move. Reinsdorf met with Jackson after the sixth championship win but was unable to convince him to come back, which meant that Michael Jordan wouldn't come back.

In an interview with NBC Sports Chicago, Reinsdorf has now revealed that even if things had worked out with Phil Jackson, Jordan was never going to be able to play in the 1998-99 season thanks to an injury. MJ Picked up the injury in the most bizarre way if Reinsdorf is to be believed, accidentally hurting his hand with a cigar-cutter (stars at the 3:49 minute mark in the video below).

"The funny thing is, that even if Phil had said he was gonna come back, Michael Jordan could not have played that year. Because during the lockout, Michael was playing with, screwing around, whatever the right word is,  with a cigar-cutter. And he cut his finger, and had to have surgery and could not have played that year."

Jordan's love for cigars was very well-known, so while this story has not been heard often before, it's not that hard to believe either. Whether the Chicago Bulls would have managed to win another title is hard to tell, but if MJ wasn't a part of the equation, it would be likelier that they wouldn't have.
