The retirement of Dirk Nowitzki marks the end of an era and the turning point for the Dallas Mavericks.
NBA Hall of Famer Julius Erving believes that the Mavericks have the perfect replacement for Nowitzki with sophomore Luka Doncic. Erving believes that Doncic can be the new face of the Mavericks franchise.
In an interview with Fanatic View, Dr. J. had plenty of good words for the Rookie of the Year winner and predicts he’s going to be an incredible player for the franchise.
” Luka is probably not top-ten yet. He has one year in the league and had a great year as a rookie and was phenomenal. Sometimes it could happen quickly for a guy years one through three more so in my estimation when a guy is in the league. His fourth and fifth year is when you really what you got. The fact that he started playing professionally at age 16 or 17 hasn’t hurt him so he might be an early bloomer than some of the guys, who go to the universities in the U.S. The one and done guys, but he had a great season, and he is a great replacement for Dirk.”
It does seem like the perfect time for Luka Doncic to enter the league and join the Mavericks, his rookie season was the same season as Nowitzki’s final one. The European star averaged 21.2 points per game, 7.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists last season in his rookie year.
There was a lot of talk about both Doncic and Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks and comparing the two rookies in their first season in the league. Both players were the two favorites for the rookie of the year award during the 2019 season.
The Slovenian star could become of the greatest players in the league with the potential he possesses, Doncic will be one of the most-watched players in years to come.
