Despite being the most valuable team in the NBA, the New York Knicks have struggled to get a star to join their franchise. Since Carmelo Anthony, stars have stood clear from the team, in some cases (like this summer) joining the Nets instead.

So what happened? Why are the Knicks struggling to secure free agents if they are considered so valuable?

According to Nets superstar Kevin Durant, the answer is quite simple.

“Fans expect players to join the Knicks because of their brand but players coming up after me have watched the Knicks lose and they aren’t cool anymore... unlike teams like the Warriors, Lakers or even the Nets.”

The years of losing have damaged the glamour of the Knicks. For younger players in the league, all they saw growing up with a team in constant turmoil doomed to lose in part because of their toxic leadership core.

They are just not cool anymore, not after spending so much time at the bottom. Since the year 2000, the Knicks have made 5 total appearances in the postseason and only advanced past the first round once.

To break the spell, the guys they do have will have to step up and bring the glory back to New York. No doubt, they will be calling on RJ Barrett to lead that charge.
