Kevin Love is all that remains of Cleveland's famous "Big Three." After Kyrie Irving demanded out and was traded to Boston in the summer of 2017, and LeBron James left for the Lakers this past July, the Cavs have become a hard team to read. While there's plenty of reason for optimism, there's also plenty to worry about as the new season approaches.
Though even in a swarm of question marks, one thing holds true: this is Kevin Love's team now, and it will be interesting to see how he leads the Cavs going forward.
In lieu of their current situation, Kevin Love had some interesting remarks to say about how exactly he ended up with the keys to the Cavalier's franchise (via ESPN Sports Center).
“I think he’s always looking for a different challenge,” said Love about James. “He’s always wondering what’s next and it feels like sometimes he’s playing chess and everybody else is playing checkers. He’s very very mentally strong, knows the game of basketball so well and sometimes, there’s things that he sees that other people don’t. So I think making it to four straight Finals, him helping the most in us winning a championship in 2016… I think he might’ve been looking for something different. A change and the next chapter for him and here we are.”
Change. According to Love, it wasn't idioc mistakes or management disagreements that sent James packing. Rather, it was changed. And, considering LeBron's choice on other major decisions, it makes a whole lot of sense.
From here, regardless of the inspiration that drove his former teammate out of town, it'll be up to Love to see that the team stays at least somewhat relevant in the midst of all these changes.
Something tells me he'll be up for the challenge.
