Kobe may be out the game, but he hasn’t turned off his basketball IQ. In an interview with Rachel Nichols, the 5-time champion was asked whether Lakers should be aggressive in pursuing Anthony Davis. “It depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. What your long-term objectives are,” said Bryant, “By signing Lebron, you’re making the indication that you want to win now.”
If the Lakers want to win now, Bryant says the Lakers should look into the Anthony Davis situation - where the addition of a superstar alongside Lebron may have championship implications.
However, Bryant may be right about one thing, the Lakers must decide if they want to win now or build for the future. With the Lakers attempting to trade away Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, and the rest of their young core for Davis, they may be putting all their eggs in one basket.
If they want to win now, Davis may be the key to help push the Lakers to the next level.
So far, the Pelicans have seemed uninterested in the Lakers offer. With so many assets on the line, even Bryant is aware of the heated situation between the two teams. Kobe went on to say that the Lakers “gotta play a little bit of poker” when considering which pieces to trade. Keeping a part of their young core or letting go too many pieces may be the difference maker for the rest of the Lakers’ season.
Bryant does have a point. In the latest Laker package, the Lakers don’t seem to be playing poker at all. The Lakers most recently offered Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Rajon Rondo, Michael Beasley, and two first-round picks in exchange for Anthony Davis. By giving away so many key players, there may not be enough firepower for James and Davis to work with.
One thing is for sure, the Lakers must decide to build for the future or build for the present. With James reaching the end of his career, this may be the Lakers attempt to help him win a championship - alongside Davis. However, is it worth sacrificing the Lakers’ young core?
