Dion Waiters has yet to play for the Lakers, but the expectation is that he will bring ball-handling and shooting to a roster that is looking to compete for an NBA title.
And despite not having an open roster spot remaining, they may not be done making moves.
In an interesting statement by Shams Charania of Stadium, he details how Rob Pelinka and the team could be looking to add more shooters ahead of the 2020 postseason.
“The Lakers are still holding out the option of potentially adding a shooter down the line. They worked out J.R. Smith as well on Monday.”
In an article published later on The Athletic, he confirms his remarks about the Lakers possibly acquiring another player such as J.R. Smith, who is a former teammate of James.
After reaching an agreement to sign Dion Waiters, the Lakers continue to monitor the market for a shooter, such as J.R. Smith, sources say. Smith worked out for the Lakers on Monday, according to sources. L.A. would need to release someone to create roster space for Smith.
Obviously, the Lakers are pulling all the stops to ensure playoff victory this spring -- and they need to. Their biggest competition, the Clippers, have what many are calling one of the deepest rosters in league history.
Without depth of their own to put up against the L.A. bench, it'll be hard for the Purple and Gold to accomplish their mission. We'll see if Dion and whoever they sign later will be enough to get the job done.
