Luke Walton has taken the brunt of the blame in Los Angeles, and most think he will be the first to go when the team begins their rebuild this offseason.
But could Walton be going chance?
LeBron James may have hinted as much in his most recent comments about the direction of their franchise in a recent interview with Allie Clifton of Spectrum Sportsnet.
“I saw something the other day where myself, [Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, and Kyle Kuzma] only played 23 games together this year. 15-8. We had a defensive rating of fourth in the NBA, and we were like seventh in offense when we played together over 23 games. As good as that is, it’s not enough for Luke to even know what he has on a consistent basis, when you don’t have a consistent roster every night during the season. Like you said, control what you can control and you’ve got to play the hand you’re dealt, and I think he played the hand as well as he could.”
LeBron poses a fair point. Besides the injury to James, the Lakers have dealt with health problems to Ingram, Kuzma, Lonzo, and Rajon Rondo throughout the season. In fact, before #23 went down on Christmas Day, the Lakeshow was 4th in the West and coming off a win against the Warriors.
No matter what happens this summer, it is fair to say they never got to see their true potential of the team they built last summer.
Taking that into consideration, maybe Luke does deserve another chance.
