It has been a swift change for the Lakers. Weeks ago, the headlines told us all that LeBron James might be on his own in Los Angeles. They were even talking about him demanding a trade. Back then, the Lakers were a disorganized mess with unrealistic hopes for the offseason.
Now, they are starting to look like a unit, and are primed for a big summer.
After striking a deal with the Washington Wizards (and after Anthony Davis waives his trade kicker), Rob Pelinka was able to clear off $9 million form their total cap space this summer. They will have 32 million dollars instead of 23 million, enough for either a full max player or several talented role-players.
Additionally, LeBron James has made a sacrifice for his new L.A. teammate, gifting his infamous number 23 jersey number to Anthony Davis, who also wore the same during his tenure in New Orleans.
Lakers superstar LeBron James is gifting Anthony Davis his No. 23, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The league has been notified of the pending jersey change, sources said.
Davis, 26, has worn No. 23 throughout his entire seven-year NBA career as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans.
Entering a summer of so much mystery, the Lakers are clearly trying to send a message: they are not playing games. With plenty of cap space, a sense of direction and competence within the front office, and teammates looking out for each other, things have turned around mightily for the franchise.
This is a good time to be a Lakers fan.
