After averaging 28 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists, Mavericks guard Luka Doncic earned a status as one of the best young players in the game. And, according to SportsBetting.com's oddsmakers, Doncic is the favorite to become the next NBA MVP at +400, leading candidates like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry, LeBron James, and James Harden.
Doncic, 21, has already ascended into superstardom, leading the Dallas Mavericks to the playoffs and taking the Clippers to six games while his co-star (Kristaps Porzingis) dealt with an injury for the majority of the series.
He has impressed mightily in the two short seasons has been in the league.
“[Doncic] has the ability to score, he gets to the paint, he’s strong, and he’s an elite passer,” former Clippers coach Doc Rivers explained in a past interview. “So, there’s no great offense that doesn’t start with a great player, and he’s a great player.”
In December of 2019, Doncic broke the record for the most consecutive games with at least 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists since the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. In August, he broke the record for most points scored in a playoff debut with 42. This season, Doncic also became the youngest player in league history to hit the 35-15-10 mark in a game.
The Slovenian native was only fourth this season in MVP voting, receiving no first or second-place votes. If he continues his current trajectory, however, one has to think it's only a matter of time before he holds the trophy for himself.
