It’s not a secret that LeBron James has carried a lot of pressure since he entered the NBA, being called ‘The Chosen One’, the best prospect in NBA history and more things. Ever since 2003, the King has tried to live up to the expectations and even though he has succeeded in the league, people still try to play down Bron’s accolades.
Former NBA star Magic Johnson, who signed LeBron James to the Lakers in 2018, has come in Bron’s defense against all the criticism he receives on a daily basis. For Magic, nobody has had a similar pressure to Bron in the last 30-40 years.
Talking with Stephen A. Smith on ESPN’s SportsCenter, Johnson said:
“Michael Jordan didn’t have this type of pressure, I didn’t have this type of pressure, Larry Bird didn’t have this type of pressure.”
Instead, Magic believes Bron has had a similar pressure to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Kareem was one of the biggest prospects in history after he joined UCLA and made history for the Bruins. He won with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Lakers, creating a big association with Magic in Los Angeles.
Kareem was held to high standards and so is LeBron. Ever since 2003, people have expected a lot from him. He has won three titles and set plenty of records in the league, but those things often get overlooked by most people.
LeBron’s greatness shouldn’t be taken for granted. We’re lucky to see him play at the maximum level at the age of 35, after 17 years in the league, dominating the stacked Western Conference. Bron is one game away from winning the NBA championship for the fourth time; perhaps when that time comes, more fans would change their stance on how great he actually is.
