Everything comes to an end, even the best things, and Marc Gasol's career in the NBA isn't the exception to that rule. Now, after countless successes and even an NBA Championship under his belt, it's time for the Spaniard to say goodbye to America.
According to Spanish insider Sergi Carmiona, the veteran big man is on the verge of coming back home and sign for FCB Barcelona.
Gasol is one of the most beloved and respected veterans around the league. He's been in the NBA since the 2008-09 season, amassing career averages of 14.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game on 48.1% from the floor, and 35.4% from beyond the arc.
He was named Defensive Player of the Year, made it to 3 All-Star Games, 2 All-NBA Teams, the All-Rookie team, one All-Defensive team, and even won the 2018-19 NBA Championship with the Toronto Raptors.
Now, at age 35, it was pretty clear that Marc Gasol was far beyond his physical prime, although he lost a lot of weight during the hiatus. That's likely one of the reasons why he'll go back home to play on a less-demanding competition despite the interest of other NBA teams.
Gasol's playmaking, basketball IQ, shooting, and defense could still come handily for contending teams next season, and so was his veteran leadership and experience.
Then again, it's pretty hard to judge his decision considering he'll go back to his hometown club and to his country, where he's one of the biggest sports icons ever.
Marc will always be remembered for anchoring the defense of the Grit & Grind era in the Memphis Grizzlies and there's absolutely no doubt that they'll even retire his jersey as soon as they have the chance to do it in front of their crowd.
