Zion Williamson is a different specimen. The New Orleans Pelicans rookie sensation entered the NBA as the next big thing, seen as the heir to the throne as the ruler of the league. Zion’s body is very different from what NBA fans are used to seeing, which makes him a bigger threat for rivals.
Moreover, that’s not the biggest weapon in his game. For Duke’s coach Mike Krzyzewski, Zion is a very sharp player that shows a big intelligence on the court. He even dared to say Williamson is as smart as some of the greatest players in the history of the game when he’s on the floor.
“Zion is really smart. All the guys that you mentioned, [Magic, Kobe, Jordan], you’re not just talking about people who are smart off the court in preparation, they are smart in the moment that action is happening,” Krzyzewski said about the Pelicans rookie while speaking on The Herd with Colin Cowherd.
“I had an interview three weeks ago where I talked about Kobe and LeBron and coaching them on the Olympic teams. They’re brilliant at the moment it’s happening, and that’s unusual. I can be smart during a timeout, but when you have somebody who is playing the game and is not just smart about his or her play but the play of a unit, boy, you have something and that’s the treasure. All those guys had it and Zion has it.”
Coach K is not a stranger for these players, as he had the chance to coach Jordan, Kobe, and LeBron when they were part of Team USA. He also worked alongside Williamson in college, so he knows what he’s talking about.
Even though an injury derailed the start of his NBA career, ever since he made his debut in the league, Williamson started making headlines on a nightly basis. Right now the biggest candidate to win the ROY award is Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies, but the things Williamson is showing right now make you think he’ll become one of the greatest when his career is over.
