NBA fans have always loved giving nicknames to their favorite players and a lot of the league's greatest ever players have owned those nicknames and lived up to them. Players like Julius Erving, who is always referred to as Dr. J, and Kobe Bryant who was known as the Black Mamba are just some examples of this long-standing tradition.
However, there is now a new generation of superstars and while some have their nicknames already, a lot of others need new ones. According to NBA fan EfficientPlane on Reddit, there aren't that many really good ones left in the league at this point as well, something they pointed out in a post asking fans about their favorite nicknames for players.
EfficientPlane: I really miss good nicknames in the NBA. Charles was the "Round Mound of Rebound". You had Dr. J. Air Jordan. Even more recently KG as the Big Ticket. Nicknames now are just so tame and lame and rarely reflect anything about the player.
ofyn: "Pistol Pete was my fav."
TheSkyIsn'tBlue: "AK-47 and Point God are my favorites."
P0de8: "Big government for Reggie Jackson is pretty good."
DiscoBooty87: "Are you telling me you don’t get a kick out of Folger Soldier for Amir Coffey?"
Maliluma: "Magic Johnson's nickname was so perfect people don't even think about it as a nickname."
Space9610: "Durantula is my favorite I wish he would embrace it."
DirtyBrd: "Always loved AI being called The Answer."
ClapBackAtYerBlackcat: "Kyle “Slowmo” Anderson and Kevin “Red Velvet” Huerter."
BackwardBeaver: "I mean I have to say that Greek Freak is a pretty great nickname and is very spot on."
thetangible: "I’m a Pistons fan and Beef Stew is perfect for Isaiah Stewart. But my personal favorite in the NBA is Time Lord for Robert Williams."
beefjerkyL: "What about Spicy P or P-Skills for Siakam."
gignac: "The Klaw for Kawhi and The Beard for Harden are good recent ones."
Awoawesome: "Joel has Embiid 'The Process' locked up."
It seems the NBA does still boast several players, stars, and otherwise, who have their nicknames already given to them. The burden to make a nickname iconic does lie with the players at the end of the day and many like Giannis Antetokounmpo are already living up to theirs.
