The signing of Dwight Howard caused a major stir within the NBA community. To most, they see Dwight as an aged, outdated big man whose mental approach to the game makes him a major liability in the locker room.
Shockingly, the Lakers decided they would be the ones to give him another chance.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis were the ones who helped to make that decision. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Howard did a good job in convincing the Lakers’ two best players that he’s changed his approach since his first time in Los Angeles:
He wanted redemption in L.A., too, after how his lone season alongside Kobe Bryant went. He wanted to be part of a championship team, and he was willing to do whatever was asked of him, no matter the role, and be held accountable at all times, Howard told them.
The Lakers had gathered momentum in their own research into Howard over the past week, but needed the roster to be fully on board. Howard won over the players in the locker room, including James and Davis, for his approach and mindset in the visit, sources said.
“He’s determined the make this the best opportunity by winning a title,” one source said.
By all accounts, it seems Dwight is determined to do whatever it takes to stay on the roster and help the Lakers win a title.
If he can convince LeBron James and Anthony Davis, he can certainly convince the rest of us. Now, as he plays this season out, he will have to back up his words with actions -- or face exile once again.
