The Lakers are in the headlines once again and this time the franchise is looking to sign Cavaliers veteran J.R Smith once he becomes a free agent this offseason.
Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes revealed on Monday that the Cavaliers are currently attempting to trade away Smith’s partially guaranteed contract. According to Haynes, the team that the Cavaliers trade the guard to will most likely waive him. After that, it’s assumed that he will be picked up by the Los Angeles Lakers.
"When he's waived, it is my belief he will end up with the Lakers," said Chris Haynes.
If this is all true and Smith does end up a Laker, it’s a reunion that we’ve all been waiting to see, J.R Smith and LeBron James. The two played together in Cleveland and were apart of the 2016 Championship where they managed to turn around a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals against the Warriors.
Unfortunately, what’s ultimately remembered about the duo is the moment that J.R Smith forgot which way the Cavaliers were shooting in Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals. It left LeBron speechless and may have been the moment we need that the four-time MVP was heading elsewhere in the offseason.
It does seem as if those wounds have healed for LeBron James and a reunion could certainly be in the cards.
The Lakers are currently reshaping their list after they traded Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart along with draft picks to the Pelicans in return for Anthony Davis. It now leaves the question of who the Lakers can bring in to play alongside their two superstars.
