Kyle Lowry is an essential player of the Toronto Raptors. In light of the loss of Kawhi Leonard, Lowry will be called on to help lead the team through their next era.

But had they not reached terms on a new extension, he might have followed Kawhi out of the door.

The 33-year-old, five-time all-star has agreed to a one-year, $31-million extension of his current contract, which is in its final year.

Heading into training camp, those close to Lowry predicted that the seven-year Raptor veteran and the engine driving the club’s rise to the NBA’s elite wouldn’t take the floor with the team until he received an extension.

On cue, Lowry didn’t participate in training camp and had already ruled himself out of Toronto’s pair of exhibition games in Tokyo against the Houston Rockets on Tuesday and Thursday of this week.

The shiny new deal may not keep Lowry in town forever, but it will be enough for the team to re-group and asses their roster in the aftermath of the 2019 Championship and the departure of Leonard.

It's clear that Toronto holds him in high regard considering the star guard received such a payout at 33-years-old. Even with that said, nobody quite knows what the future has in store for Lowry and the Raptors.
