We thought that J.R Smith’s time in the NBA may be coming to an end when his relationship with the Cavaliers fell apart but it turns out that there are plenty of NBA teams out there who are very interested in the experienced guard.
According to Cleveland.com, multiple franchises have contacted the Cavaliers about J.R Smith and their intentions on trading for him.
Cavaliers GM, Koby Altman, explained that J.R Smith’s official contact doesn’t expire until next year which means he’s the perfect rental player.
"We have a trade chip in JR Smith, and his contract, where we can take on some money that other teams are trying to get some cap relief from," Altman explained. "We are actually the only team in the NBA that can provide guaranteed cap relief until July 1. We can guarantee that right now and we actually had a phone call (Thursday) on that trade chip. So, we're going to keep on being aggressive adding those assets because we do eventually want to consolidate and be really good at some point."
Ever since the infamous Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals, Smith has been on the outs of the franchise, playing just 11 matches with the Cavs this season before he was sidelined for the remainder of the season.
The 33-year-old has had a very solid career so far with the major highlight being the incredible 2016 championship in Cleveland where the team fought back from a 3-1 deficit in the Finals against the Golden State Warriors.
Smith may be past his prime now but there is still a lot more game left in him and it may be a smart move for opposition teams to look into trading for him.
